Garlic Hot Ham and Swiss Cheese Sandwich topcook.tomathouse.com
Ingredients:
- 8 thick slices of white sandwich bread (1-1.5 cm thick)
- 60 g unsalted butter
- 2 cloves garlic, 1 minced or grated, 1 cut in half for grating on bread (optional)
- 8 slices Emmentaler or Swiss cheese (about 110 g)
- 110 g thin slices of ham
- 0.5 cups gherkins, thinly sliced lengthwise
Preparation:
- In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the butter and add the minced garlic. Cook until the butter is fragrant and browned, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and strain.
- Place 4 slices of bread on a work surface. Top each with a slice of cheese, some ham, and some gherkins. Top with another slice of cheese. Top the sandwiches with the remaining bread and spread brown butter on both sides.
- Place 2 sandwiches in a medium skillet and heat over medium heat. Cover the skillet and cook until the bread is evenly browned, about 2 minutes. Flip, cover again, and cook until the bread is browned on the other side and the cheese is melted, about 2 more minutes.
- Repeat with the remaining sandwiches. If desired, rub the outside of the toasted bread with garlic halves for a little extra garlic flavor.
